Reading :)

W.A.L.T Draw inferences from a piece of poetry

We were reading books about Huias and how the last Huia to bee seen was in the 19´s.

There were questions we had to anser about the Huia and here were the questions!

Structure

How is the poem organised?
How many verses are there?
What do you notice about the punctuation? Does it rhyme?
Is there repetition?
Does it have a sense of rhythm?

From Being alive to death.

5 verses.

Some of the words rhyme.

Yes there is repetition.

I think it does i'm not sure tho.

Meaning

What is this poem about? What is the poet’s message?

The story is about the Huia and how it is not alive anymore and the last Huia to be seen was in the 19´s.In the Poem they talked about how the Huia could sing really goodly. It also talked about how amazing and beautiful there feathers were.

Language

What words did the poet use to create an image? What was the effect of the rhetorical questions?

The singing part because like it says that there was just once bird singing and the rest were all dead.

Imagery

What pictures do you get in your mind when you read the poem? There are several metaphors in the poem – what are they? Why do you think the poet included these? What are they saying?

A really nice bird that sings really well and its beautiful feathers and the colours but they all got shot for their feathers and also money. The last Huia to be seen was in the 19´s.

Effect

How did the poem make you feel? What did it make you think about? What effect did the poet’s choices have on you as the reader?

It made me feel sad because they are extinct.

It made me think about a bird getting killed and used to decorate a hat or a coat.

The past week we have been working on the Huia and the facts about them and how they past and what happen to them!In the 19's there was a bird called the Huia. It was a beautiful black and white bird. But something bad happen to it..Won of the Maori tribe leader wanted a nice coat.So the people in his Pack looked for a really good bird to hunt down and use its feathers for the coats.Sometimes people just use the feather to sell them and earn lots of money beacuse when they found that bird everyone wanted to so when someone saw a Huia they would shoot it and use it feathers to get money.

                       Yellow hat.

What did you like about the poem ‘Huia’? Why?

I liked how the Huia had amazing feathers and the sound of them was amazing. It felt amazing listening to the sound of the Huia.

                       Black Hat.

What parts did you not like about this poem ‘Huia’? Why?

I would change the part where they were singing a song because

There could of been other Huias around singing to and they could of had

Made a sound to..

                     Red Hat.

What emotions did you feel when reading the poem ‘Huia’’?

What made you feel this way?

I felt  bad for the poor Huias because they wanted to have a good  life like us.

                   Green Hat.

What would you change about the poem ‘Huia’? Why/Not would you do this?

I would change the part where it says  lived among you once and now I can’t be found

I’m made of things that vanish a feather on the ground. Because there could of been other bird left like another Hui not just that one Huia.
